Stablecoins euro : comment concurrencer USDT et USDC

⏱️ 5 min de lecture

Les stablecoins euro Knowledge: despite the ambitions announced by Europe, their adoption remains limited compared with the dominance of USDT and USDC. To understand the issue, it is necessary to distinguish a stablecoin, usually indexed to a currency such as the dollar or the euro, from a volatile crypto-asset. These tokens are mainly used to facilitate payments, trading and transfers between market participants.

Although MiCA, the European regulatory framework, provides a clear structure for stablecoins, several provisions are considered restrictive. Parisian authorities are now calling for adjustments designed to support the euro while maintaining investor protection and limiting the circulation of tokens that do not comply with European standards.

What are euro stablecoins?

A euro stablecoin is a digital token designed to maintain a value close to one euro. For example, a holder may be able to exchange a token against euros or obtain euros against that token under defined conditions. The aim is not to generate returns like a speculative token, but to offer a more stable means of payment or settlement.

These solutions could serve businesses, associations, online platforms and individual users. Imagine a European freelancer being paid in a token linked to the euro: the recipient could more easily manage a local balance without first converting everything into dollars or euros held by a foreign platform.

Nevertheless, a stablecoin remains exposed to several risks. Its reserve assets may be imperfectly protected, its redemption process may be limited, or its issuer may face operational difficulties. It is therefore essential to verify the legal structure, the custody arrangements and the transparency of the project before using it.

Why does USDT and USDC dominate Europe?

The lead of Tether’s USDT and Circle’s USDC is largely explained by their first-mover advantage, their global liquidity and their widespread availability on crypto exchanges. Users tend to choose a token already supported by many platforms, which creates a powerful network effect: more users attract more liquidity, and greater liquidity attracts more users.

These dollar-denominated tokens also benefit from the international importance of the dollar. For many companies, holding a digital dollar is simpler than acquiring a digital euro, particularly when counterparties operate across borders. In addition, some stablecoins are perceived as offering a practical bridge between traditional finance and the crypto ecosystem.

Europe nevertheless has assets that can compete: a single currency, a large financial market and strong expertise in payment regulation. The challenge is to transform these advantages into accessible euro stablecoins.

The MiCA adjustments advocated by France

MiCA requires stablecoin issuers to comply with rules concerning reserves, governance, information disclosure and redemption. These requirements are intended to reduce systemic risks, but French proposals suggest that some of them could slow innovation or make euro-denominated tokens less attractive.

Several avenues are being discussed:

1. More flexible rules for euro stablecoins

A targeted adjustment could make euro stablecoins easier to issue or distribute while preserving strict standards for reserve quality and redemption. The goal would be to create a category that is credible for European institutions without making it impossible for smaller projects to enter the market.

2. Stronger restrictions on non-compliant stablecoins

European authorities also want to prevent the circulation of foreign tokens that do not meet EU requirements. Such restrictions could protect users from unstable or opaque instruments, but they must be applied carefully so as not to harm legitimate cross-border activity.

3. Support for innovation and public/private cooperation

Regulatory support could be combined with pilot projects, tax incentives or partnerships between banks, payment companies and technology firms. A euro stablecoin would be more useful if it could circulate in several wallets and platforms, including services familiar to European users.

For individuals wishing to experiment safely, using a reputable platform such as Bitvavo, a European exchange, or Kraken, remains preferable to relying on an unknown issuer. Before storing significant amounts, it is also advisable to consider a hardware wallet such as the devices available from Ledger.

Challenges for a euro stablecoin market

Regulation alone will not be sufficient. A successful euro stablecoin must offer a simple user experience, reliable redemption and sufficient liquidity. Users will not adopt a token simply because it is European: they will compare security, fees, availability and ease of use.

The question of reserves will also be central. Regulators will likely demand high-quality assets, such as cash or short-term government bonds, while requiring regular audits. Issuers will need to explain how customers can exchange their tokens for euros at any time and what happens if a major partner fails.

Another obstacle is fragmentation. European countries may prefer different payment systems and regulatory interpretations, slowing adoption. Cooperation between the European Commission, national authorities and the industry will therefore be essential.

A strategic issue for European sovereignty

Developing euro stablecoins is not only about competing with USDT or USDC. It is also a question of monetary and financial autonomy. A liquid digital euro could make European transactions more efficient and reduce the need to use dollar-denominated infrastructure for everyday activities.

However, a credible project must avoid becoming a substitute for the euro controlled by a private company. The reserve system, governance and redemption guarantees must be sufficiently transparent to preserve user confidence.

Conclusion: make the euro usable in the digital economy

Europe has the opportunity to develop euro stablecoins, but success will depend on a balance between innovation, protection and openness. By adjusting certain MiCA provisions, restricting non-compliant tokens and supporting cooperation between institutions, the EU could offer users a credible alternative to dollar stablecoins.

For users, the immediate priority is to remain informed and cautious: verify reserves, understand redemption conditions and choose regulated platforms. If the next regulatory steps are practical, euro stablecoins could gradually become a real pillar of the European digital economy.
